The best places to eat vegan in Dar es Salaam

As a long-term vegan (3yrs+), whenever I visit a new place the first thing I look for is restaurants and decent food options. Whenever I come across somewhere that is both vegan, and highly-recommended, I can barely contain my excitement!

And so, without further delay; here are my favourite spots for vegan food in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

  1. Kind Earth Eatery. – Located in Masaki, Kind Earth is a restaurant dedicated to vegan and vegetarian food, almost all of which is locally sourced. Into raw food? Not a problem! KE also has an extensive range of raw/living foods for those who like a little extra life in their meals. ( FYI – the owners also have a Jamaican restaurant directly next door, so even if you are eating with non-plant-based friends, there is an option for everyone!) Find their Facebook page Here

  2. Thai Kani – located just around the corner from Kind Earth, Thai Kani is a great spot to stop, enjoy the view, and have a few cocktails whilst enjoying some freshly-made sushi or papaya salad (my favourite). Just ask for your papaya salad to be made without fish sauce and you are ready to roll! Find their Facebook page Here
  3. 305 Karafuu – This one is a bir trickier to get to, and Google Maps are definitely needed. However, when you call to make your reservation with Gaspar (the uber-friendly owner!) let him know you are looking for something vegan, and he will have his team whip up a masterpiece. Every time I go there I get something different, so definitely worth the visit! My partner LOVES their meat and pasta dishes; so there is definitely something for everyone. However, vegan fare is not part of their usual menu, so be sure to call ahead. Find their website Here.

4. Tuk Tuk Thai – “ANOTHER THAI PLACE?!” I hear you ask. My answer is a resounding YES; and here’s why; TukTuk Thai has a great bar (technically a different business, but still connected) out back called the Watering Hole Patio, and have been known to host Indian Bingo Competitions from time to time. (You think Bingo is boring? Think again. This is the sort of bingo that will have you jumping on your seat and whooping with excitement. Trust me.) They also often host various DJ’s across the weekend, so check out their Facebook page regularly for updates or events coming up! Tuk Tuk Thai Facebook Page

And there you have it! Right now these are my favourite restaurants for vegan-options, and I frequent them regularly, given that I currently work and live on the Peninsula. But I will be sure to update this post as more (hopefully) open up!
